{"id":68,"date":"2013-06-18T18:37:23","date_gmt":"2013-06-18T23:37:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bunnyville.org\/xblkx\/?p=68"},"modified":"2014-09-01T16:08:26","modified_gmt":"2014-09-01T21:08:26","slug":"words-i-like-and-hate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/xblkx.lkramer.net\/?p=68","title":{"rendered":"Words I like and hate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As you&#8217;ve probably noticed, I have a thing for language.\u00a0 There are some words I like and words I hate, so I wanted to collect them here.<\/p>\n<p>Words I like<br \/>\ninterlineated<br \/>\ndelimiter<br \/>\nreconcile<br \/>\ndepleted<br \/>\nirrevocable<br \/>\nprecarious<br \/>\nhungriness as used by Garbage<\/p>\n<p>subtends (as in subtends an angle) z.B. a parsec or parallax second is the distance at which one astronomical unit subtends an angle of one arc second.<\/p>\n<p>neologism.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t know there was a word for that.\u00a0 I read this later and had to look up the definition again! (&#8220;A newly coined word or expression&#8221;).<br \/>\nbarrel (verb, as in &#8220;Winter storm barrels into the midwest&#8221;).\u00a0 I think this is so funny.\u00a0 Steph called it a playfulish word.<\/p>\n<p>There are also some words I hate.<br \/>\ntemblor (synonym for earthquake).\u00a0 I think I will nominate this to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lssu.edu\/banished\/\" target=\"_blank\">LSSU List of Banished Words<\/a>. (6\/18\/13 An earthquake by any other name&#8230; is still an earthquake.)<br \/>\nviral<br \/>\nmost of the words on lssu list.<br \/>\ncomptroller<br \/>\npupil to mean student.<br \/>\nwean<br \/>\nvet (as verb)<br \/>\nnoshing<br \/>\nmateriel<br \/>\ncouture.\u00a0 This might be the most pretentious word in the English language.<br \/>\ntapped, with the direct object of a person, to mean seeking someone&#8217;s expert advice.<br \/>\nswag and swagger<br \/>\ndearth (wtf does this mean?)<br \/>\ngutwrenching<br \/>\npotable<br \/>\ncomfy (thanks Sherry)<br \/>\ndrops, in the sense of an album being released.\u00a0 I think &#8220;rises&#8221; would be better, although both are just wrong.<br \/>\ncolonel \u00a0(how does this get pronounced like &#8216;kernel&#8217;?)<\/p>\n<p>I also dislike words that are exceptions to English language that you have to memorize and that lead to ambiguity, like<br \/>\nflammable\/inflammable, valuable\/invaluable.<br \/>\nWhy can&#8217;t these be consistent, like&#8230; consistent\/inconsistent or expensive\/inexpensive?\u00a0 WTF?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As you&#8217;ve probably noticed, I have a thing for language.\u00a0 There are some words I like and words I hate, so I wanted to collect them here.
